The Butterfly Effect?!

Question: a while ago i watched the film 'The Buttefly Effect' on Film4, and i really liked it.
earlier today i rented the film for a chance to see it again, and i was quite shocked (and disappointed) to find that the ending was different!
in the one on film4, at the end he goes back to a party or something where he first met the girl, and tells her he hates her, and something else (i cant remember - it was a while ago), and she goes to live with her mum, instead of her dad.
in the version that i've rented, at the end he goes back to before he was born, and held onto his umbilical cord and killed himself.
i actually prefered the film4 ending, but i'd like to know what the differences are for, and if the versions have different names?
also any other information would be greatly appreciated.
thanks!

Haven't watched it

think i saw the umbilical cord 1-honestly cant remembr both sound feasible

I had the same thing happen when I watched it. The ending where he tells the girl he hates her at the party is the Theatrical Cut. The one that he kills himself in the womb is the Directors Cut. When I bought the DVD you could select which one you wanted to see on one disc.

You watched the actual ending on film4. The other ending is an alternate ending- which i think is absolutely horrible.

they once showed both versions back to back on sky

Which was pretty pointless as only the last 2 minutes differed

No the film just has alternative endings.. one in which he goes back in time tells the little girl that he hates her and if she ever spoke to him again he would kill her.. then theres the alternative ending where he goes so far back in time that he stops his life from going on in the first place by causing himself to be miscarried so that he affects nobodies life, not even his mum or dads. They've done it with other movies too just to fit different audiences.. (SPOILER) like for example 28 days later.. originally tom dies in the end from the stabbing wound and they leave it in the hospital.. however! when the film was shown in american cinemas there was an uproar and everybody hated it.. soooo they created an alternative ending where tom survives and they get away to the countryside and are found by the RAF.. happier ending, which was recieved much better.

I think its just due to audience ratings.. try to cater for everyone.

ds was one of d best thrilling movies with an unpredictable ending so far.in d end i saw dt he was actually with his friend {chidlhood friend} and finally decides to burn ds books to avoid all ds thoughts and he does.he sees d same girl walk away in d busy crowded street and she doesnt even recognise him. by d way i hope dr is only one part right,

iv'e num 2 just as cunfusing ? but i'm dum lol :)

the ending where he strangles himself is the original ending after it was released and people saw it there was many complaints so they changed it for tv and dvd but both endings meant that if they didnt grow up together then all of the things that happened 2 her couldnt happen because he wasnt there meaning she could live a happy life and the names are the same for both films

same as in Hide and Seek
two different ends

the film4 ending was most likely the director's cut. The one you rented was the theatrical release. (I liked the idea of the director's cut better.)
