People in the background of TV?!

Question: For those people that are in the background of movies and tv shows; do they get a job for being the the background and/or do they just so happen to be there when the movie or show is being filmed? Do they get paid? Do they really have a script or are they just having a general conversation? I have alway wondered.... what are they doing?

They are extras. And no, most of the time they are not there just because they were there unless it is a documentary. Yes, they do get paid, but not a lot, and really sometimes they won't get anything depending on the production. Also, what they are doing and how they are doing it is all up the the director. As to whether or not they are having a real conversation that is all up to them. Some people can just talk to each other just out of the blue, but most of the time it is just pantomime.

They're called "extras" and yes, they're paid, not a lot, around $50-100 a day.

They are extras. yes they get paid. i think its like 50-100 bucks a day. they just walk about and have coversions about nothing

They are paid. The term used to be "Extras" although the newer, more PC term is "Background". They get between 60.00 and 100.00/day + lunch.

sometimes they pay you . . . .
