Is Flash Gordon (1980) one of the worst movies ever made?!

Question: I'm 35, so I had memories of watching and loving this movie when I was 9 or 10. I hadn't seen it since then, believe it or not, so I moved it up my Netflix queue.

I couldn't make it through. I stopped watching when I saw the lizard people. 24 hrs after pressing STOP, and there is still a sick feeling in my stomach from attempting to watch it. How could my great childhood memories have been so off?

I can't remember watching a worse movie. The Marine was awful, but this made it look good.

thats just how it is bro, i remember watching Blind Fury & i thought it was the greatest movie ever but when i revisited it wasnt all that much as how i remembered. i think the thing w/ it is that when youre young youre imagination runs wild & youre not really interested in the dialogue or the main concept.

& the worse movie ever made has got to be either Battlefield Earth or The Wicker Man

gl & peace!

I feel the same way about Logan's Run. :(

At least Flash Gordon had a soundtrack by Queen..........that is one redeeming quality.

It's close but for the worst see "Streets of Fire"

Isn't it wonderful how our perceptions change? I wonder what you would think of the 1950's Flash Gordon series I watched on TV as a kid. I still remember the Clay Men episode--wow, scary stuff!

I think you should watch Troll 2 or Manos, Hands of Fate.

No, it is not by a very long shot! I love this film and went to see it in the theater several times. When it got to cable movie channels, I watched it many more times; whenever it shows up, I watch it. I also have it videotaped.

It's such an enjoyable film, with the vivid colors, imaginative sets and costumes, acting as you would have seen it in the old cliffhangers, and a castful of terrific actors: Max von Sydow, Topol, Timothy Dalton, Brian Blessed and Peter Wyngarde. Ornella Muti is wonderful as Princess Aura. "No! Not the bore worms!" *giggle*

Have you seen the old "Flash Gordon" comic strips or even the comics? This film captures the look so beautifully. If I was going to have a movie marathon, I would team this up with "Barbarella". Hmmm... What else should I pick? Maybe "Queen of Outer Space" would be a matchup.

You're supposed to have fun with this film! That's what it's meant for. It's too bad you've lost the ability to enjoy it. I'm 23 years OLDER than you, and I'm not that cynical. That's really sad. The rest of us will continue appreciating the silliness, the crayon-brightness, and music by Queen!

MY TRIVIA:
Deep Roy portrays Aura's pet. They used his image for ALL of the Oompa Loompas in "Willie Wonka & the Chocolate Factory".

William Hootkins, who plays Munson, Dr. Zarkov's assistant, is Red Six aka Porkins in "Star Wars IV: A New Hope". He also is Major Eaton in "Raiders of the Lost Ark".

Richard O'Brien~Fico the Arborian~is better known as Riff Raff in "The Rocky Horror Picture Show", for which he wrote the play and songs.

Brian Blessed I mentioned before. He's a prolific actor and voice actor, having supplied Boss Nass' voice in "Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace".

Timothy Dalton, as everyone knows, is James Bond in "Licence to Kill" and "The Living Daylights".

So, how could "Flash Gordon" not be a wonderful experience?! I know that I'm up for watching it as often as I can.

"You have until the sands run UP."~Klytus (Peter Wyngarde)

"Pathetic earthlings. Hurling your bodies out into the void, without the slightest inkling of who or what is out here. If you had known anything about the true nature of the universe, anything at all, you would've hidden from it in terror."~Emperor Ming the Merciless (Max von Sydow~one of THE greatest actors! Take a look at this man's filmography, and you will be astonished.)

It was 1980 what did you expect movies were corny back then just like Top Gun. I mean it was cool back then but it is just so corny now.
