What and when was the last silent film made?!

Question: Not counting artistic endeavours or something like that, but proper silent films before films with sound took over.

Answers: Not counting artistic endeavours or something like that, but proper silent films before films with sound took over.

Commonly billed as both "the last Hollywood silent film to be released" and "the last two-color Technicolor film to be released" is "Kliou (The Killer)", also known as "Kliou (The Tiger)". It was American-made by Henri de la Falaise (credit spelled "Henry"), shot in Vietnam, and released in USA theatres on October 1, 1936. (Incidentally, Chaplin's "Modern Times" was released in USA and UK theatres on Feb. 5 and 11, respectively, 1936. It bore a film score composed by Chaplin himself, thus making it not a "true" silent.)

I haven't seen "Kliou" myself yet, but it can be viewed as bonus material on the DVD for de la Falaise's 1933 Bali film, "Legong: Dance of the Virgins". Both were shot on two-strip Technicolor, and each are just under an hour long. Unfortunately, the only extant film print of "Kliou", once thought completely lost until a few years ago, is only a black and white copy.

It was City Lights on 1931, with Charlie Chaplin.

You may get different opinions on this, but I think it was "Schastye" made in Russia in 1935. It means "happiness" in English.

Chaplin's "Modern Times" is considered a silent film -- just a little singing at the end, in the year 1936.

And, of course, there is Mel Brook's Silent Movie. Only one word spoken -- by Marcel Marceau. After doing a walking-in-the-wind to answer the phone, he is asked to be in the silent movie. He says aloud "No!" and hangs up. The partners ask Mel what he said, and Mel replies that he doesn't know because he doesn't speak French.

Well, Silent films are still being made......but, wasn't the last big film (done in recent years) Silent Movie by Mel Brooks in 1976.....how funny was that....brilliant
