Big Lebowski question??!

Question: I love the Big Lebowski, but there's something not quite right... When Walter brings the dog bowling, he says it's a pomeranian and it has papers. It's not though. Is it supposed to just show his ex is taking advantage of him, or is it supposed to be funny? Or did they just not think about it- just thought of a dogs name?

FYI Yahoo wanted to put this question in pregnancy and parenting...

i don't think anyone knows for sure, but i think you hit it on the head. i've always thought the Coen brothers wrote it in to show that Walter is a dumb@ss. For either the reason that he doesn't know what kind of dog it is and he and his ex- got it when they were still together and it's a special "show dog with f*cking papers" or that he's gettin majorly crapped on by his ex- by carrying around a dog that she got after they separated. whatever the reasoning was, the big lebowski is a comedic masterpiece that you could seriously write a book about and possibly the funniest movie ever created.

I don't think I've ever even looked at the dog to see what kind it was. I've seen that movie over 20 times and I never knew! I can only assume that your premise is correct. I can't imagine the Coen brothers not knowing what kind of dog was in their movie. They are pretty anal when it comes to attention to detail.

The screenplay calls the dog a Pomeranian, with no action lines (unseen by the audience, but for the information of the director or actors) saying it's not really a Pomeranian.

It could be either. It could be the fact that Walter doesn't want to admit it, but his ex may be taking advantage of him, so he makes it up, just to save face. I'm not really sure there's a whole lot of humor, besides when The Dude says, "You brought the dog bowling?" and Walter replies, "I'm not renting him shoes, Dude. I'm not buying him a f***ing beer or letting him take my f***ing turn."

It could also have been the fact that the filmmakers didn't really care what kind of dog it really was and randomly picked pomeranion. Who knows?
