Help! what is this movie??!

Question: i saw this at least 12 or so years ago and my memory of it is really hazy. I remember a scene i think its a classroom and theres some kind of full on military evacuation. Another scene is where some boys escape or something i think an adult is with them too and they retreat to the mountains (maybe) for safety. I dont know why but i have a vague image as someone who may look a bit like patrick swayze as the adult.. sorry i dont have more info...

TRIVIA:
Patrick Swayze, C. Thomas Howell, Darren Dalton and William Smith all are in the cast of "The Outsiders" (1983).

This is Charlie Sheen's feature film debut. Years later, he who would share a scene with "Red Dawn" co-star Jennifer Grey in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off".

This film was entered into the Guinness Book of Records as having the most acts of violence of any film up to that time. It was calculated that on average an act of violence occurs at a rate of 134 per hour or 2.23 per minute.

The illustration of Genghis Khan in the high school classroom at the beginning of the film is a caricature of director John Milius.

"Red Dawn" was the given code name of the military operation in Iraq that captured Saddam Hussein on December 13, 2003. John Milius felt honored by that.
