How does she get hooked up with Charlie Allnut, what makes her get on his boat, leaving the Methodist Church she was at?
Why is Charlie in German occupied South Africa to begin with, is he a gin runner? If not, what was his occupation/livelihood?

Why is Charlie in German occupied South Africa to begin with, is he a gin runner? If not, what was his occupation/livelihood?
1. World War 1 was going on and they wanted to help the
British out with the War effort. Also for revenge for what
the Germans did to the village.
2. Her father was a minister teaching god to the villagers
and the Germans arrived wanting the village men as
soldiers and they ended up killing her father and razing the
village. The church was more or less finished off. She
was the only survivor and Charlie took her on board to
take her to safety. He was at the village earlier to drop off
supplies and left before the trouble started but came back
after the trouble was over.
3.. He was a smuggler and he also carried supplies from
village to village. I guess he was hiding from civilization
in general. He was also an alcoholic.

First off, let me say this is one of my favorite movies of all time.
Rosie and her brother are missionaries and Charlie delivers their mail and supplies regularly. He warns them of German soldiers but they stay. The Germans come and kill her brother. Charlie returns on his run and offers to take her to safety, but she wants to go after the Louisa.
I think basically he's just a drifter who settled into a routine going up and down the river drinking his gin.
Great movie.
