Why do some movies only show at a small number of cinemas in the UK? For example!

Question: It's to do with the distribution deals that the film production company signs with the distributers.

If the distributers don't think a film will have mass appeal they will agree only to release it to a certain number of cinemas since it will cost them less up front.

Yeah, the first responder hit the nail on the head.

If the movie does not look like it will appeal to a large audience then it won't be shown in many cinemas.

The US has the same issues.

Although due to word of mouth and the Baftas/Oscars, some films will open up more around the country. I think There will be blood was a London opening to start off with?

It is criminal that Jumper can open everywhere but films such as There will be blood and Pans Labrynth don't!!
