It isn't about a child with autism. It is about a child who feels abandoned and has an over active imagination and believes he is from Mars.
The adoptive father in the movie has just lost his wife and he helps the boy learn how to be an "earthling".
The movie is based on a story by David Gerrold who actually adopted a young boy. The story was semi-autobiographical. In real life, the child didn't believe he was a martian, it was just a game they played and Gerrold was openly gay, which was left out of the movie.
He's not autistic, he just thinks he's from Mars. The question is, if you "know" it's about autism, they why are you asking?
