Question: In school today, we watched the movie Gladiator to learn about history, and I was confused about Commodus and Lucilla. Was Commodus in love with his own sister Lucilla, and was Lucilla in love back with Commodus?

I would question more of why your history teacher thought that Gladiator would be a good historical reference film.
Commodus was in love with his sister Lucilla but she didn't love him back. To me, the movie kinda hinted at her having a thing for Gladiator.
And why in the world would your history teacher think Gladiator was a good film to show to the class anyway??

Yes, he was in love with his own sister. It happened a lot in Greek plays where there would be inappropriate family love. The son killing the father to take his place in his mother's bed..and so on.
I really don't see how you would learn history from that movie. a great movie, yes, but a history lesson? Commodus was a controlling leader and wanted Lucilla only for lust. Lucilla was scared of him and she knew what evil he was. She was not in love with Commodus.
Gladiator is a GREAT movie and i wished we had movies to watch like this in high school instead of the BBC and Disney math movies. And I'm sure this movie was watched after the class had read and studied about that time and wasn't used solely for information.
Commodus did lust after his sister but she did not return that lust, she was more fear full of him and did best to not disappoint him or make him mad.

we didn't watch it to learn about history. we watched it for entertainment. and he loved her. she didnt love him back in THAT way.
