What is happening with horror movies, nowadays?!

Question: I don't if it's just me but I think the horror movies that have been coming out are just not that scary, or they are remakes or they do like, make you flinch a little or they become so predictable that you know what's going to happen in every single scene, when someone is alone or when a certain type of music starts.

The only movies that really scared me are all old ones, like The Exorcist, The Shinning , the one with the dog (can't remember the name) , Nightmare on Elm Street (dying when you're sleeping? oO scaaary) or Friday the 13th (first time I watch it , I was 15 and I kept jumping and jumping from my seat)

And also Asian horror movies are very good, and sometimes they wreck it by making remakes, like Ju-on (the grudge) the original was, for me very scary , altough the remake was good, yeah it scared me but not as much as the original.

Because nowadays they are written to entertain teenagers and teen today only care about how the actors and actresses look, what music is in the movie, and whether or not the dialogue is in the proper slang.

Plot is irrelevant. Plus, writers are on strike. That might have something to do with it. lol!

I hear you. I love horror movies and we have a hard time finding the really scary ones. I did like the reaping though, more suspenseful than scary. Seems the ones nowadays are stupid instead of scary.

have you seen the orphanage??? that's a relly good movie

I liked "Cloverfield" ... I haven't seen a good "monster attacks a city" movie like that since "Godzilla". 8^)

... I dont know but it's just HORR-ible......

I dont watch those things...it gives me bad dreams

A good, intense psychodrama is a lot scarier than some of the pointless slasher movies they've been coming out with lately.

i think as we get older, and see more and more horror films we become numb to the "scary" effect of it...

i've been trying to get scared by a movie for a long time and it just isn't happening...

i do jump here and there....

but like i said as we get old we get "immune" to the scare factor.

Cujo was the dog.
I agree 100%.
'American Werewolf in London' scared me!

You forgot Halloween series. All the older ones, except for Halloween III, are good. The remake by Rob Zombie was horriblish.

I don't know, I am a wimp and can't watch horror movies, but the old ones always scared the bejesus out of me.

We will live in an increasingly violent culture, so in my opinion, people are desensitized to it.

I agree, horror movies have gotten pretty lame. I especially don't like how they seem to all be following the 'Ultra Gore/Torture Porn' path.

I want a movie that scares me by making me think, not one that just shows me gross things and expects me to be scared.

simple right now every thing is all about being politicly correct and trying to respect every one if some one makes a really scary moviethey will only get sued a billion times back then it was a little bit after hbo really started ruinign the fcc and they needed to prove a point and also the old movies took all the good ideas all the new movies have no new creative ideas and the dog movie is called Kujo by the way lol

Yea I totally agree with you! And it seems like they are replacing suspense with gore. Just because it's bloody and nasty doesn't make it scary! Did you see the Eye of the Beholder with Michelle Pheifer and Harrison Ford? That one creeped me out.....also When A Stranger Calls Back....it's a sequel from the 70's but it's pretty good. Although those are more suspense than horror. I dunno it's all pretty sad....I miss the good scary movies!

Cujo was the dog in the movie you couldn't remember and I agree that they are pretty lame when compared to old time scary like in the movie Blood Sucking Freaks where they drill a hole in the Victim's head and suck out their brains.

The things they put in horror movies these days just doesnt shock people anymore wether it be Saw with blood and gruesome situations things they put in movies just arent shocking anymore. Scary movies to me are just so predictable and I enjoy watching them still, they are my favorite, but they dont scare me anymore. Classic movies like you said the Shining etc. were very creepy and scared me! haha, and i also love the original versions of movies ESPECIALLY Japanase made! Ju- On, Ringu, The EYe (just came out BUT is original japanese FYI) So yea.

yes i know. they think Gore is horror. and it's not. Jacques Torneur and Alfred Hitchcock were masters of the suspense genre, because they knew that less is more and not seeing everything can be more scary. i recommend the classic directors for you!!!!!

The shining sucked you want to see a scary movie get Robb zombies, House of a 1000 corpses, and his second one I can't think of the name for it, but those are some really scary movies, and they actually cut like 1 hour off of each movie because they were so gorry, wish I could see the un cut version, but I so totally agree with you the scary movies suck these days.

I guess as we get older we are not as easy to scare. We have seen all the oldies and the new stuff seems rehashed..
The scariest thing on lately is the NEWS. and after watching that
we all get a little more desensitized to the fake horror of Hollywood.

try a Korean one think it was Two sisters Well scary.

They are shocking.

yeah i agrEe my auntie says she watched one some years ago called i spit on your grave and she would never watch it again cause it terrified her apparently they banned it but ive been told you can get it in america not sure =D

I know, they're crap aren't they? At least for the most part. I think it started with Scream. I don't get why the people that make them think that introducing us to a bunch of loud mouthed, stupid, irritating American teenagers and then having someone/thing stalk and kill them is meant to be scary. If anything I take the side of the killer, cos frankly the little brats deserve to die.
But there have been a few good ones, even in that style. I recently watched 'Shrooms, and actually thought it was quite good (though I was quite stoned).

The old ones are of course far better, and scarier. Though that could be because I was a kid when I saw most of them.
As for Asian ones, yes they're good but I think they're a bit over-hyped. For instance, I didn't think the original Ring was that scary, same goes for the original Grudge. Though like I say they were still good films.

My personal favourite post-80s horror movie is probably Event Horizon. Now that IS scary, would love to see the extended version (the one that was the original before it was forced to have scenes cut from it for cinema release).

I agree that the asian ones are the scariest! Like "the eye" thats pretty good. I watched white noise the other day thats pretty good! I have to admit that blair witch project scared the hell out of me..but thats because I belived the whole "its real" rubbish. lol! Some other good ones are nightmare on elm street and polterguist. Horror films these days normally go for the shock factor rather then trying to scare you. Films like Saw, Hills have eyes and Hostel! They are pretty very good though...just not scary..more gory!

Yes, I have to agree with you that some of the recent horror films have been poor and remakes of "The Omen" and "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" have been wholy unnecessary.

That said, I thought the relatively recent remake of "Dawn Of The Dead" was excellent. It took the basic ideas of the (excellent) original and then gave them a modern twist. I think it was a better film than Romero's recent "Land Of The Dead", which may upset some horror purists, but there you go.

My favourite film of all time is John Carpenter's "The Thing". I just hope to God that no-one tries to remake that. It's a superb film and there is no way it can be bettered. (Incidentally, if you haven't seen his movie "Vampires" from a few years back, that's well worth seeking out. It's more entertaining than horrifying but it's good all the same!)

Moviegoers now don't seem to have much patience. The best horror movies tend to be pretty slow paced and teenagers (who are the ones who spend the most money at theaters) don't seem to have the ability to pay attention long enough to enjoy a good slow paced horror movie. It's all gore for no good reason and crap.

And the Korean one mentioned in an earlier comment is called A Tale of Two Sisters, and it's amazing. Also, The Orphanage was really good. I saw it in the theater during the limited release. It was quite good.
