Well, they're more like dying together. One cannot save one who never wishes to be saved. As for Cage, nothing can be worse than dying...which ironically, he longed for it. For him, dying...with someone beside him, ain't that much of a bad idea. He was beyond help...as was the author. He, too, committed suicide while the movie was being made. From that perspective, Cage's character personified the author's mental condition
