Horror comes from the everyday turning sour quickly.
Look at original Psycho.
it works for you did not honestly expect janet leigh to be killed in such a brutal, unexpected way.
Same with Duel. Dennis weaver is pursued by a faceless man in a truck (OK, maybe that's terror, but you get the idea)
Take the simple and twist it that way
You have to have your own ideas, don't get them from other people.

^ She is right, could lead to law suits. Though if you're just a guy shooting film with his buddies I don't think ti would be a problem.
Know what should be done? Something about the Bogeyman. Because HE is scary and that movie a year or so back was not. The Bogeyman is supposed to live in closets and under beds and GET you (but what does he do when he gets you?).
Yeah...if you want to make your own horror movie, bring your own ideas to the table. Otherwise it's not exactly "original." Oh, and one piece of advise, do NOT make a predictable ending. I hate that ****.
I would make it about a guy who wants to come up with a horror movie idea, and kills all the people who give him ideas. Oh Crap!!!!
Don't always show the blood & gore. Leave that to the audiances imagination. It's a lot scarrier that way. It worked for Hitchcock, & it's was made the origional "Hitcher" starring Rutgar Hauer more freaky.
