Well he was a method actor.
He lived his part, and that whole comment about shutting himself up in his apartment and working on his character sounds very very dangerous to you're mental health.
I mean, it was for a month for god's sake.
Playing the joker in this interpretation he made was no easy feat.
Well, I don't know about his mental health, but it had a part in his death I think. The guy had an awful lot of sleeping pills by his body and had gone on record as saying he bought them because of the insomnia he suffered while preparing for his role as The Joker.
I just find it hard to believe that a role would cause anyone to go off the deep end.

I think it was the drugs. There were no illegal drugs found by the ambulance or cops, but there were other people at the scene before the ambos or cops.
Well, Jim Carrey's still around. And not strapped to a straitjacket. I think that speaks a lot.
Edit: I still think his role as The Joker has nothing to do with it. The human mind is very resilient and a person like Ledger would be as resilient as anybody else. Quiet a lot of people went through worse things (and against their will) and survived such harrowing experiences. The guy was a good actor and knew well enough. He's dead....and that's bad enough. It would get worse if we make urban legend out of The Joker role thing by linking that to his death.

I don't know. I read that he was suffering from insomnia after putting up so much for the movie. It doesn't have a direct connection, though he mixed up sleeping pills.
