Assault on Precinct 13. Its a little gem of a film and Carpenter directed it as John T Chance (homage to The Duke in Rio Bravo).
I know the character name is John T. Chance from Rio Bravo, because he used it frequently. But I don't know the movie, and you've got me looking everywhere :-)
The fight scene in "They Live" was a bit of an homage to "The Quiet Man," I believe.
