The milk was laced with drugs which helped Alex and his Droogs in their pursuit of ultra - violent thrills , the name of the film is derived from the fact that you take something natural and affect a mechanical response into it like the Ludovico technique ( behavior modification ) . Kubrick the director actually had to move his family elsewhere because of death threats and there were copy-cat crimes such as the scene in which Alex sings the song originally sung by Gene Kelley titled " Singing in the Rain " during an actual crime of rape .
The film is best understood when you have read the book ; the American edition now has the 21 chapters the original had ; for reasons of marketability the first U.S. edition had only 20 . Also , find one with a glossary for it helps . I think Wikipedia has an excellent article on the film .
It is a film that explores the question as to whether any government has the right to interfere with the natural expression of a human being . Kubrick had to portray Alex as ultra - violent in the film as a contrast to acceptable human behavior and the responsibilities the citizen has to the state as a civil member of that society .

P.S. " Real horror - show , right -right? "

It's not an easy movie, like any other Stanley Kubrick movie...

the milk had drugs in it.

Yes...the milk was uh....."fortified" with special drugs! Its about a deranged group of punks set in a "future" type setting.

I really like HOPLITE2501's answer and find it the best idea summary of the film. I'd vote for it but I'm bloody level one with no power... I had trouble with the movie too at first, but then I realised it wasn't something to be taken lightely and requires more attention and open-mindedness.

the milk was a drug
