Let's look at some others, say Sin City, or Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Different, but not too different.
He's not old enough for action pics or romantic comedies or to be the leading man in a historical drama (LOTR DOES NOT COUNT). So cut him some slack with the roles available.
