I think the movie was like that because that's the way it was used to be back then. Women were degraded (in some cultures they still are).

yes it was- but that is also the way it was back then. Yes, there were strong women, usually not associated with.
The director made a movie based on a time that was much more chauvinistic. If he hadn't, the movie wouldn't have worked. That's the unfortunate part about making a movie based on a specific time frame; you need to make it realistic to that time. To criticize it for being sexist is the same as criticizing a movie like 8 Mile for being racist. Of course it's racist. If it wasn't, it wouldn't have been believable. Relax. It's just a movie.
Keven Reynolds who directed it is a specialist in films for teenage boys so what did you expect? Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio is a terrific stage actress who was wasted in movies.
Though what you say is most likely true, I adore anything with Alan Rickman in it. He has the most amazing voice!
It was not sexist and degrading. It was semi-realistic. That is how it was back then. Women were second class citizens, at best. Women were often forcibly locked into chastity belts and held against their will in nunneries.
There is a lot that is unrealistic about the movie, including how liberated Marion is.
Trying to apply today's morals and standards to a period piece is silly. It stops being a period piece as soon as one does that.
