A really funny kids movie is "Flushed Away." It was made by the same folks that make the "Wallace and Gromit" movies. Even my wife and I laughed all the way through it. Other good ones are Contact (SciFi), Signs (drama), Batman Begins (best Batman movie ever) and Spiderman 3 (best superhero movie ever).
I watched Interview with the Vampire with my boyfriend at the weekend. Still a favourite.

The anime film Metropolis loosely based upon the original film and the book by the first film's director Fritz Lang's wife Thea Von Harbou ; excellent animaton with an acceptable plot-line .

City of God (Cicada de Deus).If you haven't seen any international film yet, this is a good start. It was just screened in 2002, yet it already ranks one of the best movies all time, according to many critics and websites (e.g. TIME Magazine and imdb).
