Does anyone one Remember the name of this movie....?!

Question: There was a movie I use to watch as a kid that would come on about maybe 2 to 3 times a year (I believe it came on TBS). I use to love it but I can't, for the life of me, remember the name of it. It was probably made in the late 80's/early 90's. It was about this young boy and he had a dog. They travelled off to a far away land where they ended up in a castle and there was a math wizard that helped them solve there problem. I think there were a couple of other wizards later on. The movie, I think, started off in live action but then turned into animation. Does anyone else remember this movie?
