'Inspired by real events' I think would imply they took a lot of artistic liberties. A good example would be the movie '300', which was very loosely based on a historical event.

'Based on a true story' I think would imply the movie would try a little harder to stick to the facts of what actually happened. A good example would be 'Apollo 13'.

Lolol...I think true story has all real events...
Just real events are not the true story...just some parts of it.

One would be the inspiration of an eventual true story and the other would be the telling of that story.

i suspect that :inspired by real events" means that someone has written a story based on an event that really happened. Where as "based on a true story" is the fictionaliztion of someones interpetaion of what they THINK happened.
how does that sound?
)O~

Difference is trivial
