It is hard to answer because of the huge number of films around.

One that comes to mind and has not been mentioned is 'The Mission' with Robert de Niro. I would say it is deep and thought-provoking as well as emotional.

Some others have been mentioned, such as 'Crash' and 'Mystic River'. They come back to haunt me.

I thought that 'Born on the Fourth of July' and 'Eyes Wide Shut' were good, if you like Tom Cruise.

'Gangs of New York' is thought-provoking, but a bit too violent. 'Thelma and Louise' is a good serious movie. 'Silence of the Lambs' is one film that is hard to forget.
