Voldemort has always wanted power. Even when he was younger, before he knew he was a wizard. As the years went on, and he found out what he was capable of, he began to become more and more evil. One night, Professor Dumbledore was interviewing Professor Trelawny for a Divination post, and Voldemort had told Snape to go and spy on them to hear any news of what's going on. Well Trelawny made a prophecy about how a boy born at the end of July (Harry) will have powers the Dark Lord knows not, and he will be the one to defeat Voldemort. So Snape tells Voldemort, and Voldemort ends up going to the Potter's house to try and kill Harry. Well Harry's parents wouldn't give up their son for anything, so they died to save his life. Voldemort killed them both. But when Harry's mother died, there was an enchantment placed upon Harry that protects him from Voldemort until he turns 17. In the end, Voldemort does not kill Harry.
Basically, Voldemort knows that Harry has the power to defeat him, so he wanted to kill Harry to prevent that from happening, but killed his parents instead because they wouldn't let him have Harry.
You should read the books! The movies are good, but the books give you a much better understanding of everything.

nothing. he wanted them on his side but the main reason was that he wanted Harry and his parents were in the way. oh and voldemort dosnt really kill Harry so no clue.
they were merely dumbledore supporters and they were parents of d boy destined to bring his doom,no matter wht voldie did, harry still brought voldie down.so nothing voldie did to safeguard his life/lives,really mattered.
harry's parents were also powerful in d wizarding world. even though lily was muggleborn,she was powerful.
