...if you are adverse to rip-offs of high-profile big-screen productions, then keep the attached website for a company called The Asylum in mind, and avoid anything under their label; for the past three or four years, they have been known for doing pretty lousy knock-offs of big screen productions, which just happen to be playing, at the time....

...for "Halloween", they did a movie called "Halloween Night"
...for "Alien vs. Predator, they did "Alien v. Hunter"
...for "Re-Animator", they did "Night of the Dead"
...for "Transformers", they did "Transmorphers"
...for "I Am Legend", they did "I Am Omega"
...for "The Hills Have Eyes:, they did "The Hillside Cannibals"
...for "When a Stranger Calls", they did "When a Killer Calls"
...for Tod Browning's "Freaks", they did "Freakshow"
...for "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea", they did "30,000 Leagues Under the Sea"
...for "The Omen", they did "666: The Child"
...for "The Invasion", they did "Invasion of the Pod People"
...for "The DaVinci Code", they did "The DaVinci Treasure"
...for "Snakes on a Plane, they did "Snakes on a Train"
...for "King Kong", they did "King of the Lost World"
...for "War of the Worlds", they did...well, "War of the Worlds"

...and for the upcoming "Cloverfield", they're doing "Monster"

...who know just how they're getting away from it, but if we don't rent the films, The Asylum might just have to go away.....or perhaps, Heaven forbid, come up with something original...

as long as it done under the guise of comedy its ok....and lets face it, "b" movies and pron movies are very comical.

If you're talking about how some movies rip off a scene or a character from another movie, there are some principles to that. It's called "fair use" within the copyright laws. Satirical use is considered fair use of a product.

If you are talking about seeing bootleg copies of movies available on the street, that's illegal. If they get caught, they can be sued or even get jail time for violating copyright laws. But, nobody enforces the laws enough, so the sellers seem to get away with it.
