What decade was the best for movies?!

Question: Well movies in the 70's were just low-budget weak-plotted 2 hours of torture with little if any entertainment value but eventually came Star Wars and Superman and finally Hollywood learned that it needed to fuse special effects and storyline together to have a great movie. Thus the dawn of the modern movie era was born. Since this time what do you think was the best decade for movies; the 80's, 90's or the current decade? Sure if you look back on some of these films the effects do look a little cheesy now but a lot were groundbreaking for their times and most were added to their respected movies to add to the story.
What was your favorite decade for movies?

Sorry, I don't agree with you concerning the movies of the 70s.

Some great movies of the 70s:

All the President's Men
Annie Hall and all the other fantastic 70s movies of W. Allen such as Manhattan, Bananas etc.
Apocalypse Now
Barry Lyndon (low budget?? :-D )
China Town
The Godfather I and II (for many critics the two best movies of all time)
Harold and Maude
Movies of Romy Schneider and Michel Piccoli in the French Cinema
Klute (w wonderful Jane Fonda and Donals Sutherland)
Little Big Man
One Flew Over the Coocoos Nest
Papillon
Taxi Driver
Three Days of the Condor (one of my favorite)
What's Up, Doc?

Don't you think that these movies are great?

For me there is no best decade for movies. But good movies from late 60s and the 70s are probably my favorite.

Three Days of the Condor is sooo under rated. Report It

  • 90's....we had movies like Titanic, Seven, The Shawshank Redemption, A Time to Kill.....it was a good decade for movies.

I liked the Titanic which is my favorite movie, but i think that the current decade is the best in makiing movies. The reason i think that is because technology has improved and the special effects are outstanding. So i have to say the current decade.

90's, and its not even close

It has to be the 90's 100% some of the best movies ever.
GoodFellas, Dances With Wolves, The Silence of the Lambs , Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Unforgiven A Few Good Men, Schindler's List, Jurassic Park, Forrest Gump The Shawshank Redemption, Braveheart, The Usual Suspects, Independence Day, Fargo, Good Will Hunting Titanic, Saving Private Ryan, Armageddon, The Matrix , Star Wars 1: The Phantom Menace, The Shawshank Redemption

I have a fine arts degree with a minor in film. I don't say this to mean I'm a expert or anything, I say it because this required a deeper than usual look at film history than most. What I can say is that from the very beginning there was plenty of films meant to be nothing more than entertainment. They were churned out just as much as they are today. Some did aspire to be more than they were and failed miserably. Some without trying have become classics. Most were nothing more that what they were made to be... entertainment and money makers.

I honestly can say for myself that each and every decade holds plenty of gems that dazzle, entertain, and showcase the true art of film making. Not one year really outshines another.

I think the 90's had an unbelievable number of great films - L. A. Confidential, Living Out Loud, Gods and Monsters, etc. I don't think that the last seven years has even come close in terms of the quality of films that have been released.

I might be a little cheesy but my fav are all the movies made in the 80's. I guess I'm just a 80's geek! Don't get me wrong I love most movies, I just think the most entertaining fun goofy movies came from that era.

Definitely the 90's. I remember back in those days that you used to go to the movies and had a hard time choosing a movie to watch because they were all good. Now is not even worth it.

I think each decade had its gems, I personally like the 90s movies the best though (Goodfellas, Casino, Natural Born Killers, Pulp Fiction)....at this point though it seems all the movies are the same or they are recycled versions of old movies...it's not even worth the money or the trip to the movie theater to see a movie anymore..
