How did they get away with all the anti-Jewish stuff on Borat?!

Question: Hi,

First of all you should know that I am Jewish too.

Borat is not an Anti-Jewish movie. Actually, what Borat does is quite interesting. He makes Anti-Jewish remarks and provokes Anti-Jewish behaviour which is hidden. People who are Anti-Jewish and don't dare to say anything (in worst case they do) because it's not political correct start talking in an Anti-Jewish way.

Sacha Baron Cohen who is a religious Jew shows us the latent Antisemitism in our society.

That means: Borat is a funny movie but there is also sth very educational about it...

It was a pun, the guy who plays Borat is Jewish himself.

you can pretty much do whatever you want and say whatever you want in the movies. They were doing a comedy, and they probably didn't mean it anyways. Besides isn't the guy who played Borat jewish?

I thought it was making fun of anti-Semitism and bigotry in general rather than actually being anti-Semetic. Note how the people making fun of the Jews have never even seen a Jew themselves, and are incredibly backwards people. The side joke is that Sacha Baron Cohen is himself a religious Jew, and the Kazakhstani language he's pretending to speak is actually Hebrew.

Sasha Baron COHEN is Jewish...it was all in the context of edgy/uncomfortable humor.......kinda like when the Special Olympics endorsed Johnny Knoxville and The Ringer

Hi there.
The guys are right, Mr. Cohen is Jewish and may therefore mock anti-Jewish prejudice to his hearts content.
If he wasn't Jewish, some humourless type would no doubt be on his case as we speak. Mel Brooks would not be allowed to make "Blazing Saddles" now, yet that is the best anti-racism film of them all.
Cheers, Steve.

Because if you are part of the culture/race you can poke fun at it with no repercussion because everyone in your culture knows you are really poking fun at perceptions.

I think the whole point of creating a character like that is that we can all see how ridiculous it is! Look at any other comedy; Cartman in South Park, Peter Griffin in Family Guy, even Homer Simpson- obviously their mad, bad antics are meant to point out how mad and bad they are. They're not supposed to be some kind of role model. (Well, maybe Homer.)
