I would try shooting one or two of the nasty buggers and hope it started a feeding frenzy whereby they ate each other until I had enough rounds to finish them off

Well if I were in the car I'd stay in the car . The FLESH-eating mist wouldn't eat the metals of the vehicle !!
If I were outside the car I'd fight 'tooth and nail' till I either escaped or died . Never give up . Never ever .
