When did special effects become more important than good story and acting?!

Question: Personally, you could have the greatest special effects ever created, but if your storyline stinks. The movie stinks.

Independence Day
Spider-Man 3
Fantastic 4: Rise of The Silver Surfer
Blade Trilogy
Resident Evil... Take your pick.
Men In Black

All have great effects... at least for their time. But all have bad acting, directing or writing.

When did special effects become more important? Since "A Trip to the Moon" (Le Voyage dans la lune) in 1902. ;)

I agree with your picks. Would you add War of the Worlds? And what will the remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still be like, I wonder, with Keanu Reeves?

because people pay money to see the crap Hollywood throws at us. so instead of putting effert into it why not just put crap and sell it? u still make money. really if we where to spend more money on movies on No Country for Old Men, than on crap like Wild Hogs movies studios would make more of an effort to make good movies. saldy todays movies are run on money not art. its a damn shame. and its more of a shame when they go see great movies like NCFOM and say that sucks yet say Balls of Fury was great. WTF!

I think you answered your own question. When I saw the question I thought Independence Day. I would agree with your other picks except for Men in Black. If you are looking for the complete opposite of what you are describing see 12 Angry Men.

This genre is largely supported by teens. They don't care much about brilliant dialog, emotional depth, or thematic complexity; just give them lots of action, simple plots, and some easy laughs.

A great screenplay: 2.5million + (some charge a quarter mill a week, thats only five working days)
Great actors: 60 million +(harrison ford demands 50 per film)
On sight location: anywhere from 40-100k per day (especially when u have to house a whole crew in new york)
Consider then that the movie sucks, it becomes that movie the actor should never have done.
On the other hand, you can sh*t-can all of that, and maybe get a big name actor or director or producer to be involved and the total cost may drop to less then 60million. most films gross that in a week.

movie exec's believe that the more money you spend on a movie the more you'll make, and the sad thing is that they're right for the most part.
i agree completely with you, and i wish we could get back to good movies
