Why didn't Chewbacca get a medal at the end of StarWars: A New Hope?!

He didn't receive a medal because according to princess lea's traditions, wookies were not considered that friendly. Wookies were known around the galaxy as creatures who could rip your arms off, and most of the time were captured and used as slaves. so that being said, chewbacca didnt receive a medal because it was against princess lea's planet's traditions.
