In some ways, yes. There was this virus that turn people into man-eating monsters and also there was this immunity thing as well as few remaining uninfected. But the monsters in "I Am Legend", though a bit highly evolved, has no resistance to sunlight

Actually "I am Legend" is based off the book of the same name by Richard Matheson. Humanity is turned in vampire like creatures due to a virus, although in the book they act more like your classical vampire than the "vampire-zombies" from the movie
The book's been made into a movie twice before as "Omega Man" with Charleton Heston (1971), and "The Last Man on Earth" with Vincent Price(1964).
