i remember this movie!!!......i think it was called "laser blast!"......im sure of it!

Laserblast (1978)
starring Kim Milford, Roddy McDowall, Keenan Wynn, Cheryl Smith, Ron Masak, Dennis Burkley, Eddie Deezan, Simmy Bow

IMDB synopsis:
Alien creatures kill a mutated alien creature in the California desert. Its remains, and the high-tech laser gun and power source accidentally left behind, are found by an ostracized teenager. However, the power source causes the teenager to mutate too, and he goes on a murderous rampage.

Wikipedia synopsis:
Laserblast is a low-budget 1978 science fiction film. It stars Kim Milford (as Billy Duncan) and Cheryl Smith (as Kathy Farley), and is notable for Eddie Deezen’s debut (as Froggy) and for a four-minute cameo by Roddy McDowall (as Doctor Mellon). The plot is rather ephemeral, but it involves a constantly put-upon young man's discovery of a laser cannon, his ensuing rampage after continual exposure to the weapon's radiation mutates him into a wild, destructive lifeform, and his eventual death at the hands of the aliens who left the cannon behind on Earth in the first place.

I have watched this film many times even if it is considered poor. I'm a fan of Kim Milford, an Illinoisan from up north of here who made good in his approximately three decades of life. This is not one of his good roles, but it's ultra-dramatic and fun. I love the stop-motion aliens! So, other people can slam it, but I rally behind this one.

I've read interviews in which they discussed how much of the script was hacked out due to the budget and cost of effects. So, if the studio had gotten behind it, perhaps it could have been better. After all, "Alien" initially didn't have a big budget; it could have been more like "Dark Star".

Hey! You could team it up with this one:
Deadly Weapon (1989)
starring Rodney Eastman, Susan Blu, Gary Frank, Adam Gifford, Michael Horse, Sasha Jenson, Walter Koenig, Barney Martin, Sam Melville, Ed Nelson, Joe Regalbuto, William Sanderson
IMDB synopsis:
An experimental gun powered by an atomic reactor is misplaced when the transport carrying it crashes into a river. The weapon soon falls into the hands of a bullied teen named Zeke, who uses it to get even with his persecutors. An army team led by the overzealous Lt. Dalton is sent to recover the weapon before it's unstable reactor overloads and causes a meltdown.
