Star Wars or Lord of the Rings?!

Question: If you had to choose between the existence of the Star Wars collection or the Lord of the Rings Trilogy which would you choose?

This question is hard for me, because I know that when George Lucas birthed what had to be one of the first 3 best movies ever made (45&6) it opened a new giant gaping whole in the world of film and science fiction. The use of animation, design and animatronics shot the world of film into the 21st century. But the new SW movies (12&3) failed to live up to the giant life that was the SW empire.. The cast of the old films were so rich in character and worked so well together it is scares to find it’s match.

LOTR however does match the character bond that the first SW movies had. The trilogy of Tolkien’s brought to life by Peter Jackson, has left an immense and awesome scare on the face of fantasy of which will never fade away.

Both movies epic in their own regard, is it possible either of the two surpasses the other?

Well, I would have to say that there are many differences between the two. Tolkien wrote his books long before Lucas had ever dreamed of his movies. I am sure that there was once a time when there were more LOTR fans than SW fans. Unfortunately, books of Tolkien's caliber are short handed when compared to movies, and SW has a head start in that respect. I think the story within the LOTR movies and books has more moral fiber to them. I like the way they make me feel, and the things I think about after reading or watching them. They cause me to question things around me with different understanding, something that SW fails to do. I see a SW movie and think "That's a good old classic film." I see a LOTR movie (or read a book) and think "There is hope for the world yet." Those are two very different reactions to two very different stories. My vote goes to LOTR, though I cannot discount the impact of SW on our universe.

I would also like to point out that Lucas could not replicate his sucess with the new films. He did not win any awards for any of his films, and because SW has been raped by an entire generation of crappy authors and the like... it will never gain the undying status that LOTR has earned for itself. The SW books fail in comparison to LOTR. Authors like Kevin J. Anderson have ruined and exploited the SW universe, and Lucas allowed his story to be exploited thus. Why? Simple, the power of green. Lucas may have been a film visonary, but his recent lack of replication, I believe, has shown his true color. He was a kid that liked to build models and blow them up. You put a video camera in his hand, and what do you get? Him blowing more stuff up in 4,5 & 6. In 1,2 &3 he failed to live up to the SW myth. LOTR, however, as a book won many awards for the story... something that Peter Jackson replicated on film, since the Return of the King won academy awards. It's fitting that both the LOTR books and movies won awards for the work that was put into them. Peter Jackson tooks something great, and made it accessible to everyone. He didn't just "dump" special effects into it... they were already in the book. But, how would an entire generation understand that if they are obsessed with the big screen? That's what Peter Jackson did... he made LOTR accessible to everyone. People don't read books because they can watch TV. Unfortunately, it is a handicap. Tolkien's got my vote, all the way.

thats a really hard question but i think lord of the rings, star wars confuses me but if i watched all the movies in the right order it might be less confusing but actually i have no idea star wars is really really really good

Lord of the rings

Star Wars

Star Wars no doubt. If Lucas had had the technology of today back when the originals came out, we wouldnt even be having this discussion. The characters in SW even today are much more favorable. Everyone has their favorite SW characters, how many people have favorite LotR characters. The characters and the audience's love or hate of them is what made SW so great.

Lord of the Rings....Absolutely!

George Lucas wrote the first three Star War movies when he was a lot younger. It was a fresh story back then with fresh characters.

But I noticed that by Return of the Jedi....the characters and story were losing it's 'Freshness'

Then 22 years after the first Star Wars, Lucas makes another one. But the spark and passion were not there....too much reliance on special effects and not enough on character development and a good screenplay.

Now all three Lord of the Rings were filmed simultaneously during over a two year period. All the people involved were dedicated to the project the entire time. None of the cast had the chance to lose interest in the project.

If Lucas had did the same thing with the new Star Wars movies, instead of taking 3 years in between pictures..... the quality may of been better.

Not too mention that the Lord of the Rings movie had a great novel to fall back on for more story ideas.

I thought Revenge of the Sith was a lot better than the first two movies....but "Too Little, Too Late"

If you're interested, I just finished writing a review on the first Lord of the Rings movie for my website: http://www.entertainment-movie-guide.com...

Take it easy....

Lord of the Rings of course, anyway in Romania tonght at 19:30 CET on a Roamanian channel called PRO TV is Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

You really have to look at the original intent of the stories of both sagas. LOTR were books, and designed to be read, someone else came along and snatched them up and placed butt loads of money and special effects in to something that was great in it's own era and revive it. George Lucas was a visionary, what he did for film today cannot be forgotten. The Star Wars movies were written to be seen and viewed originally. Peter Jackson is just a guy who can come a long and take something great and turn it into something that's just as good. It doesn't take that much on his part, Tolkien did all the work of creating the world of Hobbits, Elves, Dwarves, and Wizards.
When forced to choose between the two trilogies it would have to be Star Wars hands down. Without The LOTR films, we still have the great literature that was there before it.

Both were absolutely brilliant, there's little doubting that. I love them both, and would hate to have to choose, but, as long as it's only theoretical, I'd go with Star Wars. It spans so much more. LOTR has a large fan base, and a few good games, but when you get down to it, the story, whil brilliantly told, just isn't all that complicated. You know, as soon as Frodo is given his mission, what the outcome will be. Star Wars keeps you guessing. Well, at least, the 4, 5 and 6th movies did. If you saw those, you knew what'd happen in 1, 2 and 3. So many more charcters, such a big expanded universe. Hundreds and hundreds of books by other authors about the same characters. Thousands of references to it in pop culture, it took over generations. LOTR, while great, did not rise to widely acclaimed fame untill the recent movies came out. Sorry LOTR, but Star Wars gets my vote. Either way, they're both truly incredible.

Star Wars all the way! May the Force be with you.

Very difficult to choose my friend (assuming).
I would choose the gallows or ........ God !

I enjoy L.O.T.R. more. I think that overall I like the story better. But on the other hand Star Wars is amazing.

may the force be with you
