Blu Ray or HD-DVD? Who will when the format war and why?!

Question: Blu Ray seems to be poised to win.

Sony developed Blu Ray, while Toshiba and a bunch of other companies formed a consortium to develop HD-DVD. Sony owns Columbia Studios, which now also owns MGM and United Artists. Further, Sony convinced some other studios to go with Blu Ray. For example, if you want the Harry Potter films, Warner Brothers is going to discontinue HD-DVD and will only keep them in regular DVD or Blu Ray. So, Blu Ray is winning.

hd-dvd

What is the difference? Why do we need to keep upgrading any way. Aren't movies meant to be an escape from reality?

blu ray...

Blu-Ray is going to win the format wars because almost all of the big movie companies are now backing it. Warner Bros has just joined so HD DVD is pretty much dead. They talked about this at CES.
