The Great Train Robbery. 1903

The first film with a story is "the Great Train Robbery" in 1903 with the famous last shot of the bandit firing his pistol directly into the camera.

The first feature length film is generally considered "Birth of a Nation" by D. W. Griffith in 1915. Up until that time films were generally shorter to fit on one reel as changeouts and change overs weren't thought of yet.

I read a great book called Max, which was about the development of movies in America. It's fiction, with the main character Max getting credit for what many others actually did, but it gives you insight into why and how movies developed. I forget the author, but if you are interested, email me and I'll find out who wrote it. I have that book around somewhere. (You'll have to change your settings to allow email.)
