It's the distributor's call, generally, although the producer often anticipates the call.

The film is a coming-of-age story, sort of a slice of life. That's not exactly something that the masses go for. (Action or comedy would be more of a general-public sort of thing.) Further, it takes place in a foreign land, and not in a particularly romantic setting. There's not a lot there to make people think that the movie will play to a general audience.

That's not to say that it doesn't have an audience. There are people who will see it. But it won't draw that many people. If the distriubtor has it playing in every multiplex, there will be a lot of near-empty houses. But, if it only plays in a very few theatres, and if it still draws the same crowd, then it can pack more people into the auditoriums that it does play.

"If it still draws the same crowd" is the key. People have to go a bit further out of their way to see the film if it is playing in fewer theatres. Some people may decide that if it isn't playing just around the corner, they won't go to see it. The distributor has to be fairly sure that the crowd will go to go to the few screens where the film is playing. Fortunately, the formula seems to work for a certain variety of movie. In fact, for some it works so well that the same movie will appear at the same theatre for quite a while.

a lot of theatres don't believe that the movie would draw the kind of big money they are looking for. topic's too controversial and there aren't enough hollywood explosions and romantic kisses in the rain. called the theatres around my area and that's what they said.

It's true, people have mush for brains and don't want to see anything but mindless action, killing, explosions - whatever. It's sad, but its business - if it doesn't pull in as much money as, say Transformers (awful movie with endless explosions and a oversized budget), then it won't show. Normal people don't appreciate art, and even if they do, half the people that watch it don't have the mental capacity to understand it.

Either way, if you want to watch it, here's a link:
