Donnie Darko is left to the interpretation of the viewer. Yes, some say it is about time travel, others that is is the sick twisted demented life of this kid, politics, and even a spin on a remake of a classic. No matter what people say - draw your own conclusions and make it what you think it is - this was the ultimate intent of the writer and direrctor of the film. The fact that people are still discussing the film proves its success.

Awesome movie, just love it. But I think he is going back in time to warn him of events to come, but we never find out why or how. Presumabely they have time travel in the near future. Report It

  • Go to the www.imdb.com message boards under that movie for some really interesting discussion. Bizarre movie. Most people think its just about time travel, but others have more bizarre ideas.

I know loads of people who really rate Donnie Darko but i tried to watch it a few times and fell asleep each time, cant see what all the fuss is about.

My friends and I have a theory, but we're not sure whether or not other people have thought of it also.

It's a twist modern retelling of It's A Wonderful Life. In that movie, an angel shows James Stewart what the world would be like if he committed suicide, so he sees how much worse it would be, and decides to live. In Donnie Darko, the titular protagonist is shown how much better (and alive) everyone around him would be with him gone. So he decides to go back into his room when the plane falls so that he dies, choosing to die to make the world a better place. Make sense?

The film is obviously about time travel. That's almost all Donnie talks about the entire movie.I love the movie.I've watched it over 50 times and I still only have a slight grasp on it.Seems to me like Donnie is given the chance to see the future. After the plane engine crashes mostly everyone's lives go to sh*t.He has the chance to change all these events if he dies.Sort of reminds me of the Butterfly Effect in a way.

Doesn't seem like there is a real point to the movie. It's entertaining. It makes you think.Isn't that what makes a great movie?Donnie Darko stays with you long after the movie is over.Leaves you still trying to figure it out.I'm sure that's what the writers and the director had in mind. That's what every director tries to do.

It's best if you just come up with your own theory. There is no definite right answer here. It's not a rational movie and if you try to rationalize it you'll only drive yourself crazy.I learned the hard way.
