Why is there an age discrepancy in Phantom of the Opera?!

Question: If you watch the flashback of Madame Giry saving Erik from the carnival, they are both the same age (early to mid teenagers). Madame Giry is Meg's mother yet she appears to be at least 10 yrs older if not more than Erik as an adult. How does that work? Meanwhile, Meg, Christine and Raoul are the same age roughly (the girls are in their late teens in the story and Raoul was Christine's childhood sweetheart so the same age as her) but yet there doesn't seem to be a significant age difference between Christine and Erik even though he is old enough to be her father. And her father when she is age 6 is shown to very old. So unless Madame Giry became a mother immediately after saving Erik as far as the timeline goes, shouldn't Erik be much older than the early-30something actor who portrays him to be believable? And I know girls married young back then but that's quite a jump to go from someone your own age to someone your best friend's mother's age (or father's age theoretically)

I absolutely adore Phantom of the Opera! I absolutely love the music!! I have seen the musical twice and also the film! I know what you mean about the age discrepancy! I noticed that too and thought that maybe Madame Girys life has taken its toll on her physical appearance! I can't explain Erik though!

its one of the many timeline discrepencies in the phantom of the opera, i love the show with all my heart but youre right, if erik was madame girys age it would be like marrying your father, but the writers hope you ignore all that and just sit back and listen to the pretty music, also i htink erik was meant to be portrayed a good deal younger than madame giry, if you read the book it seems that way, and taking into account the usual age differences in couples back thenit might not have been so weird
