Question: I haven't seen the movie yet but i believe this is based on the same principle and story line. Way back then the writer was very creative to think of such an idea. Am I correct?

You are indeed correct. The author of the book I Am Legend, Richard Matheson was based on is guilty of nothing more than rampant plagarism. He stole the idea. Not only that, in 1964 a movie titled The Last Man on Earth, starring Vincent Price had exactly the same plot.
never saw the 70s movie but for me the I Am Legend was
a let down.

I am Legend is a remake of the Omega Man. The principle is interesting but hardly new..man killing off mankind?
By the way, I recommend both movies! The effects in I am Legend were good though it was somewhat of a disappointment.

Yes you are correct I am Legend is based off Omega, so is 28 Days Later & 28 Weeks Later, and I am Legend is great!

In 1971, the movie was remade and re-titled 'The Omega Man' starring Charlton Heston.
In 2007, the movie was remade a 2nd time starring Will Smith, alas, 'I Am Legend'. :)
