Name this scary 1970's movie?!

Question: not sure if it was a made for tv movie or a real movie, but i saw it on TV as a kid.(1970's or earlier)

the setting of movie is back in the 1800's or some other horse drawn carriage era.i don't remember much, but there was a hand, a killer hand. i don't know where it's other body parts were, but that creepy hand would crawl on the floor, and i think it killed some people.they ended up killing it by pouring um...alcohol or salt or something on it.
does anyone remember this movie?
and also, who were the main characters? i was thinking perhaps donald southerland, but i looked thru a list of his movies and nothing grabbed my attention.
thnx for your time :)

....not so much a 'killer' hand, but more of a live and disembodied hand, your description sounds very much like one of the scenes in one of my favorite adaptions of author Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, namely the 1973 two-part T.V. mini-series, "Frankenstein: The True Story"; in the scene, Victor Frankenstein (Leonard Whiting) opens up a large cabinet, and out crawls the live and disembodied hand, from an earlier experiment. However, the hand, which once appeared fresh, vital and clean, now looked sick, decayed and monstrous, as it attempted to feebly crawl toward the doctor; sickened by the hand's appearance, and coming to the realization that his newly born creature might suffer the same fate, Victor Frankenstein takes a jar of acid, and pours it directly upon the decayed and barely living limb, dissolving it away...

...for the life of me, I cannot recall anything else similar to your description, outside of this, and within the time period you descibe...

...check out the webpages below; I even included one, which shows the doctor and his mentor, examining the hand...

there is a movie called "the hand" with michael caine but i don't think it's from that era. i do remember the film you're talking about and i could swear it's from the 60's and also called " the hand". check rottentomatoes.com

Maybe The Hand (1981)? But it's not set in the time period that you are referring to. Here's the plot: Jon Lansdale is a comic book artist who loses his right hand in a car accident. The hand was not found at the scene of the accident, but it soon returns by itself to follow Jon around, and murder those who anger him.
The only other one that I can think of is Idle Hands (1999)-which is definitely not it.

The Hand (1981) starring Michael Caine.
