What's that one movie ... ?!

Question: When I was really little (maybe 15-20 years ago?) I watched a movie with my parents. I remember only vague parts of it, mostly that it was a very red/orange movie. There is one part that I know frightened me: some unseen creature in the sand. I think a turtle or other shelled creature was on the surface and was sucked under the sand. The shell was then spit from the sand. I know this must be a small part of the movie, but it's the only memory which remains intact! I believe it was a science fiction or maybe a horror movie. Does this ring a bell for anyone?? :-)

You're describing the alien being that is sort of like an ant lion. It builds a funnel in the sand and lies at the bottom with just its head sticking out. The turtlelike creatures and others fall into the pit and can't climb out. It does spit out the shells, which later on are used by the marooned human being and alien to build a shelter.

My mom is not a big film fan, but she will watch this movie every time I switch over to it. And, we always say the same thing: Louis Gossett, Jr., should have been nominated for Best Actor and should have won it! He does an amazing job with this demanding role. He and Dennis Quaid have to carry most of the film all on their own.

Much of the landscape the story takes place in is real, an island ravaged by eruptions until nothing grows. It certainly added a lot to the look of this movie. No wonder that red-orange hue stayed in your mind.

It could either be Tremors or Dune?

beetlejuice? dune....that has sand in it......otherwise -three children and it. hope this helps you towards finding the film. xx

Not sure, but hope that they weren't home movies of the family, cause that would be very scary.

sounds kinda like "Dune" to me

i think i know what movie u talking about they were huge worm like creatures dang cant remember the name

the village???

sounds like tremors but it could be dune

Dune (1984), more than likely. But there were also sandworm-like creatures in Beetlejuice (1988) and Tremors (1990).

for sure it was enemy mine Dennis Quaid and Louis Gossett Jr.great film if you like si-fi.
