I wanted to know this very same thing for so long after I saw the movie. For a long time I mistakenly believed it be John Lennon and Yoko Ono, but that of course was wrong.
Not long ago I finally figured it out:
In the Riot House (Hyatt West Hollywood) hotel scene, William (the teen journalist) passes a room in which a couple sing a duet. This is a dedication to counry-folk-alternative singer Emmylou Harris and rock star Gram Parsons.
The couple are performing "Small Time Blues" in the movie by singer/actors Pete Droge and Elaine Summers.
