Do you agree that the best movies of the year are only the ones that are nominat!

Question: Or do you fall into the camp who thinks that not all Oscar-nominated films are all that?

I can count on one hand the Oscar-nominated and -winning films I personally liked and the same goes for most people I know who don't like every single thing they see that the critics rave about.

What people like or dislike is a personal thing. If you think back to the early 80s, do you remember ET and Karate Kid or Kiss of the Spider Woman? The best movies are ones that stand the test of time and are enjoyed for many years to come. Most of which were never nominated for any awards.

keep in mind that the lion's share of Oscar-nominated films are released in September to December

The movies nominated for the academy awards are very good ones for several reasons but the academy does not select all the good movies done in the year. there are also the sundance and toronto festival, etc.
But yeah, not all oscar winners are my favorite movies.

There are a number of factors when a film is given an award by AMPAS.

Beyond the usual politicing that accompanies everything in the film industry, there are technical things that the judges look at as well.

The awards cover a lot of categories and usually, if a film wins in more than 3 or 4, then it will likely win best picture as well.

In addition to that, the talent and off-camera personnel can win awards for various aspects of their craft.

But to judge a film as best picture, they look at the story and how well it flows in the picture, plot points, technical aspects of cinematography, how well the director got the plot and story to work. If effects were used, were they seamless in the production?

All of these things and a hundred other points, as well as box office numbers and critiques from, not just the usual critics but from the viewing public as well, all play a part in the decision to award a film an Oscar.

So, while we may not always agree with what films get Best Picture, at least we know that there is a perfectly good reason that the ones that do deserve to get the award.

just because a movie isnt nominated for an oscar, that doesnt make it a bad movie.......

No... I think Oscar nominated films are usually pretty good, but there are many wonderful films that are overlooked. I usually never read critic's reviews because I never agree with them...

Uh...no. It's just like how most of the movies Ebert gives 5 stars to, I will like. But every now and then, he loves one that I just don't get, or I love one that he hates. Thus it is w/ Oscar.
