The current filmmakers most like Anderson, in my view, are part of his clique, like Noah Baumbach (who co-wrote Anderson's "Life Aquatic" and who wrote and directed "The Squid and the Whale," "Margot at the Wedding," "Kicking and Screaming" [the 1995 campus comedy, not the 2005 Will Ferrell soccer comedy], and "Mr. Jealousy") and Sofia Coppola ("Marie Antoinette," "Lost in Translation," "The Virgin Suicides"). They share with him a certain sense of irony, skillful depictions of the way dysfunctional families operate, and an ear for arcane but apt pop music to accompany key scenes.
Tonally, Anderson's films resemble the wistful, urbane comedies of Whit Stillman ("Metropolitan," "Barcelona," "The Last Days of Disco"), and you can also draw a line to the more deadpan work of the Coen Brothers (especially "The Big Lebowski").
Finally, one of Anderson's influences for "The Darjeeling Limited" was the great Indian director Satyajit Ray ("Pather Panchali," "Aparajito," "The World of Apu," etc.).
