money talks and bullsh!t walks. Sequels suck in general, but there's a few good ones.

yeah Spider-man 3, and Shrek 3, just didn't line up w/ the originals or even the sequals (like the second movies)...

Unless it is really part of a genuine trilogy, they are just squirted out to make some bucks

I think the reason why so many sequals basically suck is because the first movie never called for a sequal. It ended, and wasn't meant to come back. There are a few movies that clearly needed the sequals. For example, Pirates 2 needed to have a sequal or else people would be very confused because of the cliffhanger ending. The Lord of the Rings needed sequals as well, for it was a continuing story, just like Pirates. However, there were some movies, like Shrek or the first Pirates film, that basically wrapped up everything. Or, at least, all of the important things. Those didn't NEED a sequal. I'm not saying they were bad, but the story didn't call for a second part. Another reason why there are always sequals is because, while some people deny it heavily, Hollywood is very much running out of ideas because of how many movies have been made. Almost every movie can be compared to another movie nowdays. For example, "The Bucket List" and "Last Holiday" are practically the same film except the main character in "Last Holiday" is a woman while two men are the characters in "The Bucket List." Another reason may be because people are always pushing for a sequal. For example, if "High School Musical" was very unpopular, Disney would never even consider the possibility of making a second part. However, because of all the fans that wanted to see "High School Musical 2," Disney Channel made a second part. Fans didn't want to wait five years before it was made, so the writers and the producers clearly rushed it. It's hard, though, to take a story that already has an end and try to twist and bend and break it until a new story can be concieved. Especially if it has the same characters. And lastly, some part of it may just indeed be in our heads. When we see a movie that is fantastic, we want for there to be more of it. A second part, another half. And this usually means that we get the standards so high in our heads that a movie can't possibly live up to it. We have so many sub-plots in our minds that the writers can't make everyone happy. Some people probably wanted for Troy and Sharpay to fly on a magic dragon in "HSM2" and go to HighSchoolLand. But that clearly didn't happen, sorry for the spoiler.
So, I really hope this helps answer your question! Happy Holidays!
