In the real world, a lamp was in the suitcase. Tarantino is vague on what is in there(In the film) as he keeps being asked. Some sources say marcelles' soul, some say the diamonds from reservoir dogs and some say a key of heroin.
It was originally just a "maguffin" or a prop to keep the story moving along, a plot device invented by hitchcock to intrigue the audience (The stolen money in Psycho, etc). Best guess, what ever you think it is,use your imagination,clues are in the film as to what it is or isn't depending on your perspective....

the movie never lets the audience know what was in the suitcase so my hubby says. Whatever it is...it glows...he has always wondered what was in the suitcase himself.
It was Marselluses' soul. I think Tarentino says that in some commentary or interview or something.
I've seen that film loads of times. It's actually my favourite film, but I still don't know for sure. It's either money, gold or drugs, I can't think what else it could be.
It's Mercellus Wallace's soul.He made a deal with the devil.Hence the combination on the suitcase 666.

i don't honestly know, but at a guess i think it's drugs
it was supposed to be marcellus wallace' soul but tarantino apparently denies this,
however it has been suggested that the plaster on the back of his neck is where the soul was removed & where it will be reinserted.
