All work and no play makes nameless narrator/main character a dull boy.

Seriously, though. There are underlying themes of the evils of consumerism and how it strips people of their true selves and identity.

Jack made up Tyler to feel better about himself. when Jack shot himself he was thinking about Tyler, so he killed Tyler instead of himself.

It's mainly about the superficiality of society and commercialism. The narrator/main character can find nothing of substance in the world; Tyler Durden represents his self-destructive impulses. The film is basically saying that in a society as meaningless as ours, one has to destroy himself in order to truly live.

Of course, this is only my interpretation. There are a number of essays on the internet about this.

I think only crazy people with different thinking than us can understand it because my x-boyfriend LOVED that movie and we had to watch it over and over and I never was able to understand the meaning behind it!

Tyler Durden lived his entire life as if it was scheduled. Everything was in sequence, planned, and pre-determined. Hw also couldn't sleep. He hated it, and often in his bouts of insomnia wished he could be someone else, someone free from the shackles of modern day society.

What he didn't realize is that during his attacks of insomnia, he DID become someone totally different. He became the person he always wanted to be.

He created the Fight Club as a therapeutic means for people like him, who worked menial jobs and lived boring lives. In Fight Club, you became someone different.

The people involved in Fight Club became inspired after Tyler showed them what they were capable of, and through this, managed to bring a team together that brought down the entire credit-card industry, reducing everyone's debt to zero.

first rule of fight club.... If you don't get enough sleep, your mind will play some crazy tricks on you. So get some sleep.
