The film "A beautiful mind" question?!

Question: For those of you that watched the 2001 film "A beautiful mind" with Russell Crowe I was wondering if you could help to explain a scene for me that I did not understand. Towards the end of the film when the old John Nash was sitting in the cafetorium with another scholar, these other professors starting placing their pens in front of Nash. What was the purpose of that ceremony and what did it signify? Thanks for any help you can provide.
