Obviously, no one has actually read anything about Lewis Carroll aka The Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson or how the novels came to be. I'm hearing the same old nasty stuff that people have been saying only in recent times. Most of you will never bother to read about a topic before you offer your offkilter notions~things you've heard someone else repeat. Do some studying before making a foolish statement, please. Why do people insist in dirtying so many things that are innocent?! This truly concerns many people, including me, this tendency to turn everything into something degrading and/or just plain nasty!

Someone notes that most of the drugs mentioned weren't in use at that time. That is true. By the way, a person could not possibly write such brilliant works while "wasted", so that theory is out. The man was a mathematician who enjoyed writing what is termed "nonsense literature".

"His facility at word play, logic, and fantasy has delighted audiences ranging from children to the literary elite, and beyond this his work has become embedded deeply in modern culture, directly influencing many artists."

"The possibility of drug use
There has been much speculation that Dodgson used psychoactive drugs, however there is no direct evidence that he ever did. It is true that the most common painkiller of the time — laudanum — was in fact a tincture of opium and could produce a high if used in a large enough dose. Most historians would admit Dodgson probably used it from time to time, since it was the standard domestic painkiller of its day and was to be found in numerous patent medicines of the time, but there is no evidence he ever abused it or that its effects had any impact on his work. There is no factual evidence to support a suggestion that he smoked cannabis." The song "White Rabbit" in the Sixties sparked people's assumption that the Alice stories were about drugs and drug use. A hookah is not necessarily used for drugs. Do some reading.

He was NOT an opium user! Opium was used to create laudanum, a painkiller and sleep aid of that time. It was in common use, and the average person did NOT misuse it! He wouldn't have been able to carry out all of his work if he had been heavily drugged, so rid yourselves of that notion, please. I hope that some people will take the time to read material about him instead of someone's gibes about this great man!

There has never been any indication that the author was a pedophile! What a nasty rumor! Study the Victorian Era, and you might get an understanding of the society then! I can't believe how many times I've seen the word "pedophile" applied to movies and novels when there is no such reason to do it! It's only because the word gets thrown around so much that thoughtless people apply it places they should not. It's rather like people hearing about a new illness or something like OCD then deciding that every other person or character has it! Do some reading before pointing fingers!

"Popular myth has Dodgson as hesitant in speech and shy in company, but the evidence of his photographs suggests he had a wide social circle of relatives, friends, and celebrity acquaintances with whom he enjoyed a special rapport."

I found this interesting, too:
"The fantasy derives not from traditional fairy stories but from the violence and anarchy of English nursery rhymes—that unique corpus of verse fragments never primarily intended for children. He added sharply delineated comic characters, many of them caricatures of people known to the Liddell children, and, being a mathematician, he made much of pursuing concepts to their logical and often ludicrous ends. It is the first literary fairy tale for children with no moral purpose whatever. Alice moves in a dreamworld, remote from ordinary laws and principles. At first bewildered by her size changes, intimidated by the grotesque and often ill-mannered beings that she encounters—types of the adult world—she gradually gains confidence to argue with them, and finally triumphantly dismisses them: ‘Who cares for you…You're nothing but a pack of cards!’ she says contemptuously to the formidable Queen of Hearts who has ordered her to hold her tongue, indeed has threatened to have her beheaded."

The theory is that the author of Alice in Wonderland was on an acid trip when he wrote this story. That's what I have heard.

makes for a good LSD movie, i am glad im not the only one who thought this movie was drugged induced

Lewis Carrol was a known Opium user, hence the referances inside the books of Alices Adventures.
LSD, Speed, etc are synthetic manufactures which did not exist then.

It's quite probable.

Triplets of belleville comes to mind (but that is actually absinthe)

It was an Acid wrote movie.....

The writer frequently smoked Opium and ate Magic Mushrooms.

The majority of the best children fantasy stories were written in drug enduces fantasies.

Well the author was totally on drugs. So uhm yeah ... that explains a lot.

did you have to ask that question? you know she was lol

There's a version of alice with only Pink Floyd - dark side of the moon album - in it ( no dialog). Find it if you can.
MAYBE you can put the movie on and listen to the album, PAY ATTENTION.

Lewis Carrol was a known opium user & a pediphile.

Yep,LSD!
