There is a movie that sounds similar to what you describe except its not black and white, both the father and the son are alcoholics, the son Nick Nolte, eventually kills the father and sets his body on fire in the barn, the girlfriend is Sissy Spacek, I am sure Nick Nolte won an award for his performance the movie is called "Affliction".
