For book series... I'd take Harry Potter.
For movie series... LOTR.
To me, reading LOTR bogs down a bit in the details. Potter is a easy read, and there is much more plot, subplots, and supporting character involvment than in the movies.
LOTR on the screen is as it should be... epic. Plain and simple.

Nothing can beat the grandeur of the novel (AND the film).
All I can say that J.R.R. would find a perfect successor in Mr. Jackson.
i like both films..but my first selection is harry potter <all parts i love> especially the first one...

In terms of movies - I will have to say Lord of the Rings - even though I am a huge Harry Potter fan. It's just Peter Jackson did a wonderful job directing LOTR. He obviously was not afraid to make it over 3 hours. WB is dropping the ball with the Harry Potter movies, which are really good, don't get me wrong, but they could be a lot better. I vote that Peter Jackson should direct the last Harry Potter movie. He would do a good job.
For the books - that's a tough one. I could take the easy way out and say they both offer their own strengths - but I will have to settle with the fact that books 5,6 and 7 of Harry Potter beats out the LOTR's, while the LOTR triology beats out the first three Harry Potter books.
